Not to mention the plot was EXTREMELY predictable and the inclusion of Cora’s brother Lucien was SO unnecessary. i understand having it written in the sense that the reader experiences some of what the mc feels but it’s to the point that i didn’t even know if he was alive until the actual end.

Also, the ending scene could have been played out a little longer to give it that emotional depth that the characters were feeling. For years, I watched every person he came into contact with latch on to the goodness inside him and drain him of it, taking it for themselves when they inevitably moved on. Instead, Cora (who is so irresistible but SO unappealing to me) goes round and round with Alastair keeping him at arms length even until the last line of the epilogue.
